Voice And Data Cabling: Does Yours Stretch The Distance?

Dropped voice cables and interrupted data are a royal pain, especially if you pay for any premium service. Generally, the more you pay for voice and data services, the better these services should be. One possible issue is with your voice and data cabling. You might want to have your service provider check the cabling to see if it stretches far enough to provide you with the best service possible. The cabling can be found and checked in one of three areas.

Overhead

Old telephone poles once used (and may still be used!) for plain old telephone service are now used to connect voice and data cabling to your home. The wires are run from the top of the poles into your home, usually via the roof, and then down into the basement where they are routed up into the rooms of your house where you have voice and data services and/or a modem that manages these services. If the cabling overhead is too taut, the signals may criss-cross between other cables and wires that are too close, or the signals may be intermittent. Lengthening and replacing the cables here should end some of the interference you are experiencing.

Underground

When the cabling for your services runs underground, and the technician suspects that the issue is with the underground cabling, your yard may be dug up to find the wires/cabling and address the problem. Hopefully the issue does not get this far, or hopefully your cabling is swinging from a telephone pole. Once the cabling underground is examined and found to be adequate, your yard is put back together. In the meantime, the cabling remains exposed while the technician tries to figure out if the signals are able to traverse the distance between the nearest service box and your house.

Service Box

Voice and data service providers have service boxes parked on street corners and other locations. Technicians like Hi Country Wire And Telephone who service these boxes are able to tell when the cabling for a home or business property does not stretch the distance of the projected service area. If you have been accidentally receiving some signals but not consistent service because you are actually out of the scope of service and too far from the service box, there is only one way to rectify this. The technician will disconnect you from this service and provide an alternate service plan that does extend into your area and your home
