Your business needs a network so people can share files. Cloud networks and servers are an option, but having a local network of just your business's computers plus an onsite server may be what you really need. Local networks tailored to your company are easier to protect and afford more independence.

Dedicated Security and Protecting a Smaller Network

If security is your biggest concern, have a local network and onsite server installed instead of placing all your documents and data on a cloud network and server. It's much easier to maintain that security on a small network instead of hoping no one targets the big cloud network you may choose. Another issue with cloud servers and networks is that you don't know who else has their data on that network and whether the programs they have and the files they store can cause the server to have problems. Your network will still face risks, but you can tailor the security to better fit your company's situation.

Equipment Acquisition and Upkeep

If you have a network installed and have your own server room, you'll need to be careful about selecting the best equipment for your needs, and then maintaining it, both in terms of physical condition and fixing software bugs. You could have to hire a network/IT person for your business or have a third-party company, like the one that installed the network, take over maintenance. If you go with a cloud server and network, you won't have as many equipment issues, of course, but if something goes wrong with the cloud server, you can only wait, and you won't know how quickly the server will be back up. Having your own server can reduce the waiting time.

Relying on Another Business to Stay Online

Even if you have your own network and onsite server, you'll need to contract with an internet service provider, and you'll have warranties and guarantees for equipment and service through other companies. So, no matter what you do, you're at least somewhat dependent on other companies to stay online. But if you use a cloud network run by another company, you're very dependent on them staying in business to keep your whole network afloat. If you want to reduce that risk, have your own network installed onsite with your own server.
